Hiking the Peninsulas: Allegan State Game Area

Let's face it, most hiking trails in South West Michigan are nothing more than glorified board walks. For those of us that really like hiking, the typical trails in the area just lack something to be desired.

Fortunately, there are trails only a short distance from our house that are rugged, secluded, and challenging. These trails are in the Allegan State Game Area. You can see a map here.

Much of the challenge and ruggedness of these trail are due to the fact that they not maintained very well, often blocked by fallen trees. But if you don't mind a little scrambling, these trails are a real treat. They take you around Swan Creek Pond, where ducks and geese flock. You wind your way up and down small gulleys, over a few streams, and along marsh land. Overall, I really enjoy this trail.

Last Sunday, Jamie and I decided we needed to get out of the house and go for a short hike. Since Sadie has been born, we've been a pair of home bodies. So we loaded the kids into the car and headed down to the Allegan State Game Area. With a nearly two year old and a one month old, we weren't able to be out long, but it was just good to be outside and get the legs moving.

Jonah decided he needed to use one of my trekking poles. He was so concentrated on poking it in the ground that he would forget to watch where he was going. There were a few steep and rough descents that I tried to help him on, but he would push my hand away and do it on his own. What an independent little booger. But I'm glad he wants to actually walk himself. Seeing how excited he gets about all the trees and birds and bugs makes me think that he'll love the outside like I do.

After a little bit of walking on his own, Jonah did get tired. So we put him in our backpack carrier. Sadie was carried by Jamie in her Boba carrier.

It was hot, humid and buggy. Nevertheless, it was a great day to get out on the peninsulas as a family!
